I am surprised and grateful for the response and gratitude this website has generated and am glad it has been able to help people figure out which site best suits their needs. As such, I have completed an update as of August, 2016 due to high demand and new sites becoming available. The information for each website has been updated to reflect the current website. The original reports have been moved to the bottom tabs but are still available for comparison. Perhaps the easiest and quickest way to determine the difference between each site is by reading the "REVIEW SUMMARY" at the bottom of each informational page.
This website was designed to help boat buyers, like myself, make more educated decisions when purchasing a used boat. It does not contain tips on buying the boat- the internet is saturated with sites like that. What it does do is compare the 5 leading websites that CLAIM to provide facts on used watercraft. These 5 sites include BoatHistoryReport.com, BoatFax.com, HINValid.com, MarineTitle.com, and HINDecoder.net/Boat-Alert.com (which appear to be the same owner). The sites are meant to provide similar services such as CARFAX and AutoCheck but you will see how close they get to that goal in the following pages.
For each site you will find copies of actual reports from these leading companies. Since I've completed an update, I've left both the older versions (from 2013) along with the newer versions (August 2016). I will discuss the positives and negatives of each and the experience of using the website.
I am also including reports from each website on 2 different boats so that you can compare the information provided. The first report I am including is for a Wellcraft Boat that was involved in a messy accident that resulted in both vessel damage and an environmental lien due to damage to sea-grass flats. The second HIN I chose, the Bertram, has been US Coast Guard Documented boat back to 1995. This data is important because you are able to see the history of the boat, including location changes (which could show salt vs fresh water), change in ownership and name changes. This boat was also in 2 accidents.
The last page of the website, titled "Comparison Chart" includes a summary chart of what each company CLAIMED to offer compared to what they actually offered.
As far as which one is best, I will let you make that decision based on the facts that I present to you. I have spent a lot of time creating this website and hope that you find it useful in your research.
